Hanns-Dietrich Schmidt

Was born 1955 in Düsseldorf. During his Theatre Studies, Art History and Philosophy at the University of Köln, he worked as dramaturgy and director assistant at the Theatre Köln with Hansgünther Heyme. After that  he is becoming dramaturg at the Theatre Köln, dramaturg at the Württembergischen State Theatre and chief dramaturg at the Theatre Essen.  

In 1988 he is becoming professor of Dramaturgy and Practical Theatre Work at the Folkwang Universityof Arts. 

Between 1990 and 2003 he is dramaturg and program creator in the leading team of the Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen.

Until now he was guest dramaturg in Frankfurt, Bremen, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Lausanne, Zürich, Taschkent, Tel Aviv, Luxemburg, Madrid, Mannheim, Bochum, Maribor and hold university seminars about German Dramaturgy (Köln, Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Tel Aviv, Milano) and about antique Theatre (Athen and Delphi). 

1994 he is becoming Vice Dean and 1996 Vice Rector for International Relations and Events at the Folkwang University.

He had cooperations with following directors: Hansgünther Heyme, Günter Krämer, Herbert König, Paul Schalich, Peter Eschberg, Peter Kühn, Inge Andersen, Lisa Nielebock, Brian Michaels, with authors as Christoph Hein, Hans Magnus Enzensberger, Gaston Salvatore, Arnon Grünberg, Jochen Berg, Thomas Hürlimann, Thomas Harlan and with the visual artist Wolf Vostell.

He worked for the International Art-University-Exchange as permanent jury member fort he DAAD. 

He wrote books about the history of the Recklinghauser Ruhrfestspiele,  Shillers Theatre work, Daniel Casper von Lohnstein and the baroque Dramaturgy.
