Frank Wedekind processed the morality befitting urges, life into his plays. He unmasked it as hypocrisy and set it in front of a vision of the world that celebrates life and sexuality. The freedom and beauty of the people that embrace sexuality was only found in the socially excluded: the circus, crooks and whores, even if they appear in a distorted form. The play „Spring Awakening” maintains it’s actuality „because prejudices long thought gone as well as double hypocritical morality still haunt or day to day, through our society, through politics, religion and last but not least through today’s political correctness”, considers the show’s set designer, Helmut Stürmer.
Charles Muller was born in Luxembourg in 1953, starting his career as a director in 1984. Between 1980 and 2004 he taught at the Theatre Faculty within the Music University in Saarland, at the State Music and Performance Arts Academy in Stuttgart and at the Film Academy in Ludwigsburg. Since September 2004, Charles Muller is the Director of the Esch-sur-Alzette Municipal Theatre in Luxembourg.
About this show, director Charles Muller declared: „Ultimately, Wedekind’s play brings the thematic and consequence of lying to centre stage. Even now, there’s stress from the ever rising demands, despite the Internet and the general «enlightenment». Moritz dies because of an over-dose of stress caused by the increasing demands and Wendla is lied to in every possible way up until her death. Nothing new it seems, about our world.”
